Medieval Costume: Tonos the Red, A Viking

by admin on July 27, 2008

Costume Party eh? Music to my ears. The wife and I have been to enough medieval things in the past to have bits of costumes stowed away. Every time a new party rolls around the bits get dusted off, altered, improved and added too. This party, a birthday party for Marie, one of the lovely girls who works with Glen (my wife), was no exception.

Glen sewed me up an nice big tunic thingy and a massive cape. The wig and beard were bought and styled to suit. The pants are old dress trousers that were dyed and the boots are cheap gumboots with added leather and fur. The belt is actually a woman’s fashion belt. There is a knife and morning star that were built for a previous party and the dirty great sword is one of a matched pair that my very clever father made for Glen and me.

There were a few items were made specifically for this party, here are 2 of the main ones:

1. The Helmet

This was a $19 plastic hat purchased from a haberdashery by Jo (see her tattoo here) for one of her parties. She gave it to me for this party but it needed a fair amount of altering to take it from “cheap plastic” to “steely goodness”. Flooring vinyl was added along with fur and studs made from DAS modelling clay. The texture was achieved by sponging on Selleys No-More-Gaps, a technique I also used on the shield. The rest is just paint.

2. The Shield
This was an after thought. I needed something else to wave around and crash into people with. I cut out a round piece of MDF added the iron strips (vinyl again) and part of a $2 push light to create the bronze dome. A bucket load of furniture studs were hammered in and then it was time to break out the Selleys for some more texturising. The rest is paint. A spouting bracket was added to the back along with some fabric strapping to use as arm holds.

The whole costume was pretty comfy and easy to move around in, though I stayed pretty still in a crowd for fear of bashing someones head in with the shield or lopping off a toe. hehe. The only downside was that the beard seriouly affected my ability to consume vast quantities of cider so it was quickly discarded.

I\'ve got a drinking problem...

All in all it was a great party and everyone turned up in costume which is always satisfying. See our Start Wars costume pieces here.
